Beauty And The Beast

The Evening Telegraph - 21st January 2004

"MAGICAL" PRODUCTION
Review

One word springs to mind, when referring to Tread The Boards Youth Music Theatre's lastest pantomine production Beauty and the Beast - and that is "magical".

Agnes Boardman's direction brings out all the humour in the John Morely script. There is plenty of action in this colourful panto, with ample opportunity for audience participation.

The production moves along at a good pace and the pit band, under the musical direction of Andrew Grier is excellent.

The large enthusiastic company, aged from 8 to adulthood, works tirelessly and succeeds in bringing the story to life with aplomb.

At last night's opening performance, principles were in fine form - all bringing out the best in their respective roles. Simple and effective sets, subtle lighting and cleverly designed costumes add sparkle to the polished performances on stage.

A few technical problems with the sound, particularly in the Beast's Castle scenes, will no doubt be rectified as the run progresses.

Beauty and the Beast runs at the Gardyne Theatre, Dundee, until Saturday, at 7.30pm nightly, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
