OUTSTANDING CAST BRINGS TO LIFE MOVING STORY OF TAY DISASTER
Review by Roddy Phillips
THE highly successful Five Pound And Twa Bairns finally opened at Aberdeen Arts Centre last night, and promptly sold out. Acclaimed by critics and public alike, the productions boasts its original Dundee cast of Tricia Stewart (Mary Boyd), Sue Robertson (Grace Steele), Christine Howie (Rebecca Lawrence), Scott McRuvie (Alec Boyd), Danny Adams (Andrew Steele) and Sinclair Ross (Bernard Lawrence).
Written by Mike Gibb with music by Mairi Paton, who together created the Mother of All Peoples, Five Pound And Twa Bairns is an altogether more complex musical play, telling the story of three women from different backgrounds united by the Tay Bridge disaster of 1879.
Directed by co-writer John Nimmo this is one of those shows you can lose yourself in. Cosy, funny and, of course, very moving, it has a genuine sense of place and time. The cast are nothing short of outstanding.
Five Pound And Twa Bairns plays at Aberdeen Arts Centre today at 2.30pm and 7.45pm. All Proceeds will go to the Mary Slessor Foundation.
